During the course of the Together We Reachcampaign, KUED participated in the federally-mandated conversion to digital television. This change let us expand our services with three KUED digital channels: KUED 7.1, offering our regular program schedule in high definition and 5.1 surround sound; KUED World 7.2, offering PBS public affairs programs; and KUED V-Me, our Spanish language channel. KUED raised $2.5 million from private donations to cover the cost of the conversion. These donations were used to match funds from the State of Utah and the federal government.
The conversion included building a shared digital transmitter building, transmission tower and antenna with a consortium of local broadcast stations. KUED installed two digital transmitters in St. George and Richfield and constructed a digital translator system to cover the remaining areas of the state. We partnered with KUEN on a joint master control facility and acquired digital equipment to record, archive, store, and play back HD PBS programs and our own HD productions. We also converted our production equipment to a digital format.
During the Together We Reachcampaign, KUED produced hundreds of hours of programs from political debates to national entertainment specials and documentaries that explore the history, people, places and issues that shape life in Utah. PBS has picked up many of our productions, including Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, for national distribution. During the campaign, KUED secured significant multi-year sponsorship for this annual holiday special.
Our community outreach activities touched the lives of more than 100,000 people who attended screenings, panel discussions, workshops, exhibits and other activities. By producing Contact and Billboard, we gave voice to more than 1,300 non-profits statewide. Through our Ready to Learn initiative, we reached thousands of at-risk children, providing free books and practical activities to close the achievement gap. Our We Shall Remain project included the production of five documentaries one on each of Utah's five tribes plus a curriculum guide that changed the way Native American history is taught in Utah schools.
Between individual, corporate, and foundation donations we have raised $29.2 million to fund these local productions, outreach initiatives, and national programs. In kind donations during this period amounted to $4.5 million.
Over the course of the Together We Reachcampaign, KUED received numerous gifts of support in bequests, charitable gift annuities, and long-term gift intentions. KUED's Planned Giving program has seen a 38% increase in the number of gifts to the station during the Together We Reachcampaign, providing the station an additional $724,000. KUED was also selected to participate in a national PBS planned giving initiative to increase gifts of support to the station.
