The existing University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) is a full-service psychiatric hospital with 90 inpatient beds, and outpatient clinics and services. The 123,000-gross-square-foot expansion will add 80 patient beds in private rooms, organized in five patient care units. The expansion will support new patient rooms and associated therapy, gymnasium, craft rooms, conference rooms, faculty offices, and dining and support areas. The building will provide a new main entrance for the expanded facility, reorganize patient intake functions, as well as new staff and visitor entrances. New kitchen and dining facilities will be created at a location central to the expanded Institute. Recognizing the therapeutic benefit of the natural environment, the building is being designed so each space benefits from the views of the surrounding mountains, hills, and valleys.
