Plans for the new Willard L. Eccles Observatory were announced in 2006, and the telescope opened in the fall 2009. The observatory is located at an elevation of about 9,600 feet on Frisco Peak, near Milford, Utah, and is part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science. The 32-inch reflecting telescope, built by DFM Engineering, took its first pictures the night of October 15, 2009. Frisco Peak telescope has a special feature that makes it possible to be operated by remote control from campus, 250 miles away. The observatory was made possible with a major gift from Willard L. Eccles.
